The London bid for the 2012 olympics pledged to be the greenest games so far. But will it be delivered? The planning documents and environmental statement for the Olympic Park suggest that no energy performance requirements further than current building regulations will be enforced, leaving it to the building’s developers’ to incorporate sustainability measures. Furthermore, London 2012 nor the ODA have released details on their carbon offsetting plans for the travel aviation emmisions released during the games. Marketing material suggest that the Olympic Park will be fueled by renewable energy, whereas a CCHP plant is planned running on fossilfuels, again leaving any implementation for solar, wind and biogas energy up to the constraints of the developer’s construction programmes and budget. It seems yet again that the UK authorities are issuing spin giving a misleading impression, whilst missing a unique opportunity to ensure a truly environmentally sustainable olympics. The problem is that there is no organisation that could put all this together in time. The gap between what we want and what we can do in the time and with the money available is huge.
