According to the datasheet below, there should be a 0.33μF capacitor on the input and a 0.1μF capacitor on the output: http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/LM%2FLM7805.pdf I don’t have any 0.33μF capacitors, and I’m wondering if it would cause a problem to use a 1μF instead? Also, I have the voltage coming directly from a transformer through rectifying diodes into the regulator. Should I add a large decoupling capacitor at the input as well? But others have said most new notebooks are multi-voltage, so you would only need to buy an adapter. Is this true? Does anyone know about the 700m? If I need a converter, which one should I buy? You need to verify two things before you decide which way to go. First find out what voltage and frequency is used in the area you will be at. I spent some time in Europe and although most areas use 220vac some that have high influx from the US do have 110vac available in their buildings. If not: Look at your current power supply, if it reads 110-220VAC and 50-60Hz as the input then it will be fine with just an adapter for the type of wall outlet used in France.
